If you purchase the Royalty DLC and already have a save game created, you will need to create a new save game to play with the Royalty DLC. This is due to compatibility reasons and to ensure that everything works correctly, the Royalty DLC adds in a bunch of new items, quests and mechanics which need a fresh save to work.
